The Boy Merchant

Ogudirim’s teaching career begins in Umuba, a small community, where he works alongside two other newly posted teachers, including Becky Funke, a young woman from Lagos with a passion for teaching. The school is poorly maintained, with crumbling infrastructure and limited resources. Despite initial struggles with the children’s attachment to their senior teacher, Mrs. Maduko, Ogudirim gradually earns their trust through diligence and care. Becky becomes a close friend, and as their bond deepens, she becomes a source of companionship and support in his journey.Throughout his time in Umuba, Ogudirim battles harsh living conditions, unpaid salaries, and health challenges caused by poverty and neglect. To cope, he turns to poetry, finding solace and expression in his writing. His efforts culminate in winning The Endowment Poetry Prize, which provides financial relief and recognition for his talent. Becky, deeply impressed by his success, grows even closer to him, and they develop a budding relationship. However, life throws another challenge when Becky reveals she is pregnant, leaving Ogudirim to grapple with questions of responsibility and the uncertain future ahead.
